Cricket Victoria wish to advise of the passing of former Hawthorn-East Melbourne and Victorian State representative Mike Fitchett on the 1st April 2021, aged 93.
Please see below some notes from the Cricket Victoria Historian Mr Ken Williams
Mike played for Vic 1950-51/1952-53. In 1951-52, when he made 523 runs @ 47.54 for Vic, he made a century against WA at WACA on his Shield debut. He was a member of HEM premiership teams in 1949-50, 1950-51 & 1955-56 (best not to mention his scores in those games, though – they were 2, 0 & 0)! He must have a fine all-round sportsman – 30 VFL games for Hawthorn and later he was one of Victoria's top amateur golfers.
Kingston Hawthorn 1st XI scorer and club historian Mr Craig Reece advised that Mike had the distinct honour of also captaining Victoria in his first two First Class matches, being against Tasmania and Western Australia.
Mike’s career record is as follows:
First Class: 13 matches, 21 inns, 3 N.O., 589 runs @ 32.72, H.S. 108 (vs WA on debut), 1 x century, 3 x 50s, 9 wickets @ 40.66, Best 4/23, 7 catches.
District 1st XI (Hawthorn East-Melbourne – 1945/46 to 1956/57): 82 matches, 94 inns, 19 N.O., 1,927 runs @ 25.69, H.S. 138*, 1 x century, 10 x 50s, 51 wickets @ 26.23, best 5/31 (only 5-wicket haul), 46 catches + 1 stumping.
On behalf of Victorian Premier Cricket, our thoughts are with the Fitchett family and those that played with Mike at Hawthorn-East Melbourne. Vale Mike.
