Men's Premier Cricket Review - 30 Jan 2021
Date of Event Victorian Premier Cricket: Sat Jan 30, 2021 7:17PM
Geelong skipper Eamonn Vines brought up his first century for the season (115*) against Kingston Hawthorn.

Round 9 of the Men's season in Victorian Premier Cricket was played in positive conditions, despite the weather that occurred in the preceding 36 hours prior to the toss of the coin.

As per Tuesday's result, 8 out of the 9 Men's 1st XI matches were able to take the field, with the game at the Uni Main Oval between Melbourne University and Ringwood abandoned without a ball bowled. The Rams players and support staff must be cursing the weather gods after also not being able to take the field on Tuesday.

In the results that did take place, there was a tied match at AH Butler Oval between Frankston Peninsula and the Camberwell Magpies, with both sides finishing at 9/207 off their 50 overs. For the hosts, Jack Conroy (41*), Ryan Hammel (39) and Jai Elcock (36) were best with the bat and skipper Brodie Symons (3/42) bowled well, while the Magpies were led best by Rishab Guddadamane (59), Akshay Kodoth (51) and Chris Bridle (3/46).

Northcote closed the gap on top spot after a strong win against ladder leaders Carlton at Princes Park #1. The Blues batted first and were well held to a total of 143 with Cam Stevenson (35) and Evan Gulbis (31) the only bats to make a start, while recalled bowler Daniel Lalor (5/29) and Michael Topp (3/35) did the damage. In reply, the Dragons chased the target for the loss of 1 wicket with in-form opener Mark Phelan (67*) and Josh Sundberg (61*) guiding the visitors to the points.

Casey-South Melbourne kept their chances alive at Casey Fields #4 with a hard-fought 11-run win against Essendon, who had James Seymour return. The Swans were all out for 211 with Ash Chandrasinghe (67), Harish Kannan (35) and Lachie Sperling (34) bat well, while the Bombers attack shared the wickets with Matt Doric, Liam Bowe and Seymour all taking 2 each. In return, the Bombers found themselves on the back foot at 3/24 with Seymour, Aaron Ayre and Michael Hill all back in the sheds before James Ryan (56) and Liam Molloy (57*) played positive knocks but time eluded them to see the result go in the Swans favour, with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kannan both taking 2 wickets each.

Across the day, some strong batting knocks were performed, with Fitzroy Doncaster's Jack Rudd (105) scoring his second century of the season in the Lions' win over the Greenvale Kangaroos, Geelong skipper Eamonn Vines (115*) and teammate Tom Jackson (85) scoring freely in the Cats' win over Kingston Hawthorn and Melbourne skipper Blake Thomson (95*) continuing his strong recent form in the Demons' win over Footscray.

With the ball, Northcote's Daniel Lalor was the pick of the bowlers with his 5-wicket haul, while Dandenong's Adam McMaster (4/29 vs St Kilda) and Melbourne's Kyle Williamson (4/13 vs Footscray) both put in strong days. Eight bowlers across the grade finished with a 3-wicket haul.
