Josh Manning scored a fine 89 today for the Saints

The stage is set for some tense finals action tomorrow as batting teams prepare to defend moderate first innings totals in Victorian Premier Cricket. There are sure to be some nervous moments tomorrow and some awkward run-chases.

At the Merv Hughes Oval, Footscray tallied 214 against Melbourne, with Dylan Brasher (50), Travis Dean (36) and Dan Sartori (37) doing best. The Demons' bowlers shared the wickets around, Kieran Elliott (3/34) the most successful. Although Jack Harper was out early, Blake Thomson (36*) and Sam Harper (41*) saw Melbourne to 1/77 at stumps and in a strong position.

At Melbourne Uni, the home side bowled Northcote out for 187 and were 7/86 in reply at the close. Skipper Blayde Baker (49) top-scored for the Dragons, Steven Reid (4/61) was the pick of the Uni bowlers. Melbourne Uni lost Isaiah Borgas (0) and Fergus McKenna (2) early to be 2/3. Wickets continued to tumble regularly. The equation for Uni tomorrow is 102 runs, Northcote requires three wickets.

Carlton totalled 8/294, the highest score of the day, against Essendon at Princes Park. Brayden Stepien (46), Evan Gulbis (43), Nikhil Pottabathini (36), Xavier Crone (60*) and Cam Stevenson (40*) all made contributions without anyone going on to a big one. Crone and Stevenson added a very useful unbroken stand of 93 for the ninth wicket. The Blues can bat on tomorrow for a further 10 overs before the Bombers' response.

St Kilda posted 5/283 against Prahran at Windy Hill. Josh Manning (89), Jonathan Merlo (90*) and Pete Handscomb (45) top-scored. The Saints may also bat on for another 10 overs tomorrow morning before Prahran's reply.
