Stepien, Hill and Gapes smash 'em
Date of Event Victorian Premier Cricket: Sat Oct 12, 2019 8:54AM
St Kilda's Josh Manning is bowled by Harrison Goad for 17

Essendon, St Kilda, Prahran and Frankston Peninsula remain undefeated after two rounds of Victorian Premier Cricket. Michael Hill, Matthew Gapes and Brayden Stepien were the stars today, all three scoring big hundreds to guide their sides to victory.

Essendon (5/290) posted the highest team total of the day, with skipper Michael Hill blazing a superb 146, scored from just 134 balls with 17 fours and two sixes. Opener James Seymour (60 off 67 balls, 9 fours, 1 six) provided his captain with good support. The target proved far too many for Greenvale Kangaroos, who folded for 109. It was Hill's ninth Premier ton (5 for Melbourne, 4 for Essendon).

Prahran crushed Kingston Hawthorn at Toorak Park. The Hawks began positively, at one stage reaching 3/103, with Simo Ivetic (37) top-scoring, but some excellent quick bowling from Andrew Perrin (4/39) and Matt Wilcox (2/16) saw the innings fall away, the last seven wickets tumbling for just 45. James Billington (96) and Adam Bull (47*) made light work of the chase, putting on 148 for the opening stand as Prahran cruised to a nine-wicket win with more than 25 overs to spare.

Melbourne also had an easy win over Camberwell Magpies at Camberwell. The Magpies could only muster 140, with skipper Andrew Fekete (32) doing best. Jackson Coleman (3/27) bowled well for the Dees. Fekete picked up the wicket of opposing skipper Cameron White with the first ball of the Melbourne innings and, when Matt Whittaker trapped Matt Brown lbw soon after, it was 2/8 and the Magpies had a sniff. But Charles Lill (63*) and Meyrick Buchanan (60*) put on an unbroken 101 for the third wicket to see the Demons to victory with a bonus point.

The Lions and the Saints were engaged in an absorbing contest at Schramms Reserve. Batting first St Kilda totalled 179, with Josh Bartlett (55) and Jonathan Merlo (46) top-scoring. Fitzroy Doncaster skipper Ejaaz Alavi (3/28) did best with the ball. The Lions' reply ebbed and flowed, but ultimately fell just short on 167. Seven batsmen scored between 12 and 37, but none were able to go on. Fourth-gamer Matt Hennig (5/33) and second-gamer Will Lovell (4/26) were the stars for the Saints.

Frankston Peninsula won a high-scoring encounter with Monash Tigers at the Butler Oval with just two balls to spare. The Tigers' target of 9/272 was set up by Andrew Humphries (77), Marcus Berryman (41) and Mitch Perry (36). The Heat's response was dominated by Matthew Gapes (130 off 120 balls, 6 fours, 8 sixes) with a wonderful innings. It was his second and highest Premier century in his 117th match.

In a nail-biter at Russell Lucas Oval, Northcote held out Ringwood to claim victory by the narrowest possible margin. The Dragons tallied 8/228, with 100th-gamer Mark Phelan (55) and Joshua Sundberg (61) doing best. The Rams replied with 6/227. David King (65 & 3/32) had a good game, while Tom Stray scored 43 in his 200-Club qualifier.

In other games Geelong beat Casey-South Melbourne by 29 runs in a high-scoring clash at the GCG, Carlton also beat Melbourne Uni by 29 runs in the "Ice-Block Cup" match at Uni and Dandenong overhauled Footscray's total at the Merv Hughes Oval.

For the Blues Brayden Stepien scored a brilliant 128 off 144 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes. It was Stepien's third Premier century and equalled his previous highest score.
