Three nail-biters
Date of Event Victorian Premier Cricket: Sat Oct 5, 2019 8:33PM
Jarrod Martignago chops on today. He scored a handy 18.

There were three absolute thrillers in Premier Cricket's season opener today. Camberwell Magpies chased down Geelong's 6/255 with a ball to spare, Frankston Peninsula chased down Northcote's 7/238 with two balls to spare and Melbourne Uni also chased successfully against Dandenong and, although the Students had thirteen balls to spare, they were nine down when victory was achieved.

The hero for Camberwell Magpies was Isaac Conway (56) on debut at the club in an even team performance. Chris Dew (70) and Ben Ashkenazi (3/51) stood out for the Heat and paceman Steven Reid (5/34) was excellent for the Students. Debutant Akon Mawien had a memorable day, taking a wicket and scoring three not out to help Uni over the line.

Essendon and Prahran started the season with a bang, easily accounting for Carlton and Casey-South Melbourne respectively. Last season's premiers were bowled out for 75 at Princes Park, with left-arm tweaker Liam Bowe (3/12) doing most of the damage. Casey-SM folded for just 45, the club's lowest total at Casey Fields, with right-arm quicks Matt Wilcox (4/8) and Andrew Perrin (3/19) taking the honours for Prahran.

Footscray and St Kilda each had comfortable wins over Kingston Hawthorn and Greenvale Kangaroos respectively. The Doggies and the Saints lost just one wicket each in overhauling their targets. Dean Russ (116*) scored his 16th Premier century and enjoyed an unbroken second wicket stand of 193 with Travis Dean (75*), while Jonathan Merlo (81*), Josh Manning (65*) and Josh Bartlett (4/31) were the stars for the Saints.

Fitzroy Doncaster (226) scored too many for Monash Tigers (129), with veteran Peter Dickson (94) top-scoring, while Ringwood regained the Fairbairn-Lloyd Trophy with a good win over Melbourne at the Albert Ground. Jackson Freeman (51*), David King (46 & 3/11) and Matt Fotia (3/11) all contributed for the Rams.
