Demons claim third Women's Premier Flag

The Demons have capped off the perfect season after claiming their first one day title against Box Hill at Casey Fields yesterday. The Premiership Cup will sit nicely at the Albert alongside the T20 title taken out earlier this season.

Batting first Box Hill got off to a strong start with openers Zoe Griffiths and Pennie Harrison putting on a 58 run opening stand before Rachel Carrick broke through to dismiss Griffiths for 23.

The Mustangs continued the momentum however and the partnership between Harrison and Isabella Weber took the score to 95 and threatened to take the game away from the Demons.

However Emma Medland claimed the dangerous Harrison for 42 caught by Samantha Ryan. Ryan was in the action again soon after, a run out seeing Weber on her way for 23.

From there the Mustangs’ innings never gained any real momentum and tight bowling and fielding pressure from the Demons restricted Box Hill to 6-171.

Medland claimed 2-22, Breannan Harris 2-29 and Carrick 1-39.

A steady and cautious start to the run chase saw openers Anna Harris and Elly Donald take the score to 68 before Harris went for 21.

From there, Donald took complete control of the game, blasting the attack to all areas of the park on her way to a career best 90 before being dismissed seven runs short of victory.  It was a knock that came off 106 balls and included 13 boundaries.

Fittingly skipper Bridie Chesterfield was out in the middle when the winning runs were hit in the 40th over, securing an eight wicket victory and a Premiership for Melbourne.

An outstanding season by both clubs where all three XI’s made the finals shows the enormous depth of botch clubs and no doubt a long rivalry ahead.

For the Demons who entered the Women’s Premier Competition in 2012, this is now their third flag along with the previous two T20 titles in this grade.
