Northcote goes through to the Prelim after knocking off Uni today

Melbourne, Northcote, Carlton and St Kilda were today's winners in Victorian Premier Cricket. The Demons and Dragons have earned themselves a week off and go straight through to the Preliminary Finals, while Melbourne Uni and Footscray, with the second chance, will contest next weekend's Semi Finals. Uni will host Carlton, Footscray will host St Kilda.

Melbourne made short work of Footscray's total of 214 at the Merv Hughes Oval. Sam Harper (122*) and Blake Thomson (90*) continued on from yesterday's platform, finishing with an unbroken second-wicket stand of 207. It was Harper's fourth Premier century, he faced 171 balls and he hit 12 fours and a six.

At Melbourne Uni, Northcote's modest 187 proved too many for the home side. Resuming on 7/86, the Students battled to 113, with Jarrod Martignago unbeaten on 49. For the Dragons Jonty Rushton (4/23) and Sam Harbinson (4/51) did most damage. Northcote was 0/42 in its second innings at lunch when both captains agreed to call stumps.

Carlton, resuming on 8/294, finished with 337 against Essendon at Princes Park. Xavier Crone (81) and Cam Stevenson (60*) took their ninth wicket stand to 132, a new club record. The Bombers were never really in the game and, despite some good resistance from skipper Michael Hill (70*) and opener James Seymour (45), fell short with 203.

At Windy Hill, St Kilda batted on for ten overs, going from 5/283 to 5/343. Jonathan Merlo (121*) scored his second Premier century, receiving good support from Patrick Rowe (46*) in an unbroken sixth wicket stand of 121. Merlo faced 221 balls and he hit 13 fours and a six. Similar to the game at Princes Park, St Kilda took control with "runs on the board", Prahran ending with 199. Will Sutherland (56) and Matt Wilcox (36*) top-scored for the True Blues. The Saints' star with the ball was Will Lovell, with 6/55 off 15.4 overs.
