Panthers and Rams win to hang on....just
Date of Event Victorian Premier Cricket: Sat Feb 22, 2020 8:00PM
Sam Mills took 5-22 for the Tigers today

Melbourne Uni, Essendon, Carlton and St Kilda further staked their claims as serious finals contenders after respective bonus point victories over Northcote, Camberwell Magpies, Prahran and Kingston Hawthorn today in Victorian Premier Cricket.

After a week of heavy rain, it was perfect weather today, though not all pitches enjoyed a perfect preparation, which meant there was generally some joy for the bowlers.

Essendon took just 14.1 overs to chase down the Magpies' miserable 53 at Camberwell, Carlton needed only 17.5 overs to overhaul Prahran's 102 at Toorak Park and the Saints required 18.5 overs to reel in Kingston Hawthorn's 82 at Harry Trott Oval. These three matches finished very early.

Melbourne Uni is now eight points clear at the top of the ladder after an easy win over Northcote at Bill Lawry Oval. Defending 7/199, the Students rolled the Dragons for 112, with Peter Hatzoglou (4/32) doing best with the ball.

James Seymour (5/22) was the main destroyer for Essendon, Xavier Crone (5/33) did most damage for Carlton and Todd Murphy (6/12) was the star for St Kilda.

Centuries were scored by Ringwood's Tom Rogers and the Tigers' Scott Edwards, the second Premier ton for each, while Saints' spinner Todd Murphy and the Kangaroos' Sean McNicholl each took career-best six-fors to set up wins for their sides.

Greenvale Kangaroos jumped above Frankston Peninsula on the ladder with a comfortable win at Greenvale. After McNicholl's brilliant 6/18 (9.3 overs), 23 year-old Englishman Jack Potticary scored a maiden Premier century, remaining unbeaten on 107 off 111 balls, with 16 fours and 2 sixes. Potticary and skipper Michael Stretton (35*) added an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 108 for the Kangaroos.

Dandenong recorded a good win over Melbourne, also banking a bonus point. James Nanopoulos had another good match with 61 & 2/28 to further stake a claim on this year's Ryder Medal. The win keeps the Panthers in finals contention - they're now just three points shy of Prahran (8th). In the final round, they must defeat St Kilda and rely on Prahran (v Geelong), Essendon (v Monash Tigers) or Melbourne (v Frankston Peninsula) to lose.

Ringwood scored too many runs for Casey-South Melbourne at Casey Fields today, but the Rams' win would have been easier but for a remarkable century to Swans' Jordan Wyatt. Coming to the crease at 4/44, Wyatt pounded 107 off just 80 balls with 10 fours and 5 sixes. It was his maiden Premier century in his 77th match. The Rams still have a remote chance of finals. They must defeat the Magpies and rely on the Cats to beat Prahran and the Saints to defeat the Panthers.
