Luke Wells carves out some history
Date of Event Victorian Premier Cricket: Sat Feb 8, 2020 8:13PM
Luke Wells scored a sensational 290 today at Casey Fields

Casey-South Melbourne's Sussex import Luke Wells was the outstanding individual performer in Victorian Premier Cricket today with an astonishing innings of 290, scored from 275 balls with 33 fours and 14 sixes. It was the second-highest score in District/Premier Cricket history after Bill Ponsford's 295 for St Kilda against South Melbourne in the 1926-27 semi final.

In the days prior to the introduction of District Cricket in 1906-07, there were six players who topped Wells' total today; details appear below.

Casey-SM's total of 5/470 was the highest team score since Prahran's 6(dec)489 three years ago against the Cats at Toorak Park.

While Wells' heroics at Casey Fields stood out, Northcote's Aaron Crispe also stood up, taking a career-best 6/41 against Essendon at Bill Lawry Oval. The Bombers looked ominous at 1/100 with James Seymour (75 off 76 balls, 13 fours, 1 six) firing, but spinners Crispe and leggie Joe Medew-Ewen (3/37) crashed through, taking the last eight wickets for just 54 runs.

The Dragons, in reply, were in trouble at 6/58, but Jonty Rushton (31*) and Jack Lalor (25*) saw the Dragons to 6/114 and still in with a chance.

Melbourne Uni has extended its lead at the top of the table, having already taken first innings points over Fitzroy Doncaster. After rolling the Lions for 148 (Nick Fletcher 50, Fawad Ahmed 5/55), the Students reached 4/191 by stumps, with Fergus McKenna (60) and Andrej Yaksender (44*) leading the response.

The other matches saw clubs generally struggle for runs, with most matches evenly poised - Camberwell Magpies (9 dec 258 - Daniel Rawson 53 Simon Hill 51) versus Kingston Hawthorn (1/36) at Walter Galt Oval, Melbourne (245 (Meyrick Buchanan 59) to defend against Carlton (2/30) at the Albert Ground, Monash Tigers (247 - number nine Jackson Waters 59 and debutant Yash Pednekar 58), Ringwood (216 - Tom Rogers 62) battled against Footscray at Ringwood as did Frankston Peninsula (6/220 - Matt Gapes 75, Nicholas Mann 58) against Prahran at Toorak Park and Geelong (226) against St Kilda (2/19) at Kardinia Park.
