Melbourne and Geelong 2nds form a guard of honour for 600-gamer Dan Bomford

Two centuries, two nineties, two five-fors and a couple of impressive debuts highlighted today's opening round of Victorian Premier Cricket, but one of the biggest highlight was Dan Bomford umpiring his 600th Premier match. It was a glorious October day with brilliant sunshine.

Dan Bomford made his Premier debut 38 seasons ago and has been a wonderful contributor to Victorian Premier Cricket. Dan officiated today at the Albert Ground with Darrell Holt - The pair have just 1,234 Premier matches between them and Premier Cricket salutes these two legends.

Harrison Smyth (105*) registered his fourth Premier century as he and Brayden Stepien (57) spearheaded Carlton's 6/272 against the Bulldogs at Merv Hughes Oval. Dean Russ (91) top-scored in Footscray's reply, but from 2/174, left-arm spinner Eddy O'Sullivan (5/53) bowled an impressive spell to end the Dogs' reply at 8/228.

The other centurion today was Demon Sam Harper against the Cats, but his third Premier ton was to no avail. Geelong batted first and totalled a respectable 6/276 at the GCG. Josh McDonald (92 off 94 balls, 7 fours, 2 sixes) top-scored, with handy contributions from Hayden Butterworth (46) and skipper Eamonn Vines (44). Melbourne was cruising in reply at 2-207 with Harper (114 off 106 balls, 6 fours, 3 sixes) and Blake Thomson (67) adding 159 for the 3rd wicket, but Brody Couch (4/32) and Angus Boyd (3/29) both bowled superbly as Melbourne lost 7/33 to fall in a hole.

St Kilda (9/196 - Josh Bartlett 72, Patrick Rowe 52) throttled Prahran's (6/193 - Adam Bull 52) reply as Jon Merlo (10-0-34-3) and Michael Beer (10-0-37-1) applied the screws at Harry Trott Oval.

Reigning premier Dandenong (5/197 - Lincoln Edwards 68*) also applied the screws to Ringwood's reply (7/187 - Ian Holland 66) as spinner Akshat Buch (5/26) bowled beautifully. Wilcock, Thomas, Nanopoulos and Opanayaka all bowled their ten overs economically.

Fitzroy Doncaster (7/207 - Sam Elliott 58*, Liam Banthorpe 53*) restricted Essendon (165 - Ejaaz Alavi 4/11) at Windy Hill, Northcote (2/122) thumped Kingston Hawthorn (121) at Walter Galt Oval, Melbourne Uni (5/174 - James McNeil 65) chased down Greenvale Kangaroos (9/173 - Sunam Gautam 63) with eleven balls to spare at Uni and Casey-South Melbourne (6/207 - Lachie Sperling 69, Jordan Wyatt 55) beat Frankston Peninsula (7/203 - Tom Wood 96, Liam Tonkin 56) at Casey Fields.

Best of the debutants today were son of Matthew, Sam Elliott (58*) for the Lions and Dutch international Fred Klaassen (4/23) for the Tigers against the Magpies.

In the 2nds, congratulations to Uni's Michael Clements, who scored a brilliant 211 off just 165 balls with 27 fours and 2 sixes against Greenvale Kangaroos. Also to Essendon's Isaac Willett (116) against the Lions.

In the 3rds Nick Mann for the Heat (121* off 125 balls, 13 fours, 1 six) batted extremely well against Casey-SM and, in the 4ths Essendon's Ryan Nankervis (103*) against the Lions and Northcote's Ben Pereara (5/25 v King Haw) starred.
