Rounds 1,2 and 3

GROUNDS AND RESCHEDULING

It will be another challenging season in Premier Cricket, with as many as five main ovals out of action at various times.

Northcote's Bill Lawry Oval is undergoing renovations and conversion to drought-tolerant summer grasses and is expected to be unavailable until after Christmas.
Ringwood's Russell Lucas Oval is also being transformed with drought-tolerant summer grasses and is also expected to be unavailable until after Christmas.
Melbourne - the Albert Ground is also being converted to summer grasses, however works on this will not commence until after Round 5. Expected to be unavailable in November and December.
Richmond - Punt Road Oval will be unavailable for matches in October due to AFL Grand Final functions on the ground.
North Melbourne - the club is seeking approval to play its 1sts and 2nds matches at JJ Holland Park in 2008/09. As a result of this proposal, it is anticipated that no cricket will be played at Arden Street for the season.
Footscray Edgewater's 3rds and 4ths ground, the Tony Dodemaide Oval, will also be undergoing conversion to warm-season grasses. Likely to be unavailable for Rounds 10, 11 and 12.

Whilst Cricket Victoria can assist with the two Central Reserve grounds and the Harry Trott Oval, the Pennant Committee has asked that all clubs be patient and understanding with the rescheduling arrangements, which will necessitate some Sundays for lower eleven matches. As much notification as possible will be given to clubs and umpires - weekly updates will be provided on the Premier Cricket website.

WOMEN'S PREMIER CRICKET

From 2008/09, Premier Cricket welcomes women's Premier clubs under our umbrella as part of the integration of women's cricket at Cricket Victoria. Initially this will comprise nine clubs, thirteen teams and six matches each round, but the hope is to expand upon these numbers over the next few seasons.

Premier Cricket rules have been expanded, where required, to accommodate women's cricket, with basically women's 1sts playing under men's Premier 1sts and 2nds rules for one-dayers (50 overs per side) and 3rds and 4ths rules for two-dayers (80 overs per day). Women's 2nds play only one-dayers under men's Premier 3rds and 4ths one-day rules (45 overs per side).

Our Premier Cricket Umpires' Panel has been expanded to 100 to ensure that two umpires are appointed for all 42 Premier matches each week.

One of the major drivers of the integration of Women's Premier Cricket with the men's has been Kelly Applebee. The VicSpirit star has unfortunately (for CV)
resigned to take up a role in Education and Training with Cricket Australia. We wish Kelly every success in her future endeavours and thank her for all her hard work.

NEW ADMIN MANAGERS

Clubs to have appointed new Administration Managers for 2008/09 are Camberwell Magpies (Wayne Stewart), Casey-South Melbourne (Laurie Walker), Footscray Edgewater (Tom Brain) and Richmond (PeterWells).
We welcome the four newAdminManagers aboard and thank the outgoing Admin Managers for all their assistance. Fortunately for three of these clubs (and CV), Rohan Lawton (CM), Graeme Joslin (FE) and David King (Richmond) will be continuing in other roles for their clubs and will be able to assist the incumbents in the transition. The appointment ofAdmin Managers by all Premier Clubs is funded by grants from Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria and has undoubtedly enhanced the levels of professionalism in the administration of clubs.

SEMINARS

Training seminars have been conducted in recent weeks by Cricket Victoria for our coaches, umpires, scorers and curators in preparation for the coming season. These personnel are vital to the success of Premier Cricket.

MYCRICKET

Cricket Victoria has signed up with CricketAustralia's national solution, MyCricket. This competition management system will hopefully provide long-term continuity and consistency for the accurate recording of information, as well as a national database for cricket and cricketers. Most importantly, it will be at no cost for all affiliated clubs and associations.

CV 200 CLUB

At the July Cricket Victoria Delegates' meeting, the admission of eligible scorers into the CV 200 Club was recommended and endorsed. Although long overdue, this recognition ackowledges the outstanding contribution made by our hardworking scorers and we congratulate the inaugural fourteen qualifiers. CV 200 Club members receive a pass for all cricket in Victoria for life and will be officially inducted at the next CV 200 Club function during the season.

We are seeking more information as to other scorers' totals, particularly those who have passed away. Phil Monohan (Coll/ CM), Jack Cameron Sr (NM) and Wal Bright (Foots) certainly all scored in well over 200 games, but any other nominees or information that clubs may have would be most welcome.

DISCUSSION FORUMS

Cricket Victoria is currently in the process of conducting discussion forums on two matters which have been the subject of much debate over a number of years. The CV Board wished to form these two discussion groups, bringing together groups comprising people with a broad range of experience, views and ideas.
Premier 3rds & 4ths - The Future
What is the primary role of the 3rds and 4ths in 2008-09 and beyond? Is it fulfilling this role now?

Premier Clubs - Closer Links With Women's Cricket
Could Premier Clubs better embraceWomen's Cricket? How? Would your club consider starting a women's team?
There has already been one discussion forum conducted for each group, but if your club has anyone interested in getting involved in further sessions for either or both groups, please contact either Ryan Batchelder or Peter Binns at Cricket Victoria.

CRICKET VICTORIA AGM 2008

Cricket Victoria's Annual General Meeting was held on Monday 25August.ABoard election was required, with the retirement of Ken Fewster and Mal Smith having to renominate. There were five nominations for the two vacancies - Michael Findlay, Jim Higgs, Jack Sheehan, Mal Smith and Ken Stone - and, following an exhaustive ballot process, Mal Smith and Jim Higgs were elected. PREMIER RULES

Premier Cricket rules have undergone a general tidy-up in relation to grammar and terminology (eg replacing VCA with CV and Club Cricket with Premier Cricket) and several rules have been amended to accommodate the Women's Premier grades.
Apart from that, the main rule changes relate to the inclusion of "powerplays" and "free-hits for foot-fault no-balls" in one-dayers for all grades. The acceptance and adoption of these rules in all senior levels of limitedovers cricket encouraged the Pennant Committee to trial them in Premier Cricket. Although it may take some time for captains, players and umpires to familiarise themselves with the tactics and strategies, it would appear that they are here to stay.

PENNANT COMMITTEE

Following the retirement of John Malligan after eleven years' service, Northcote's RossMacKenzie was elected at the March CV Delegates' meeting. The Pennant Committee comprises five delegates:
Russell Thomas (Camberwell Magpies President & CV Delegate) Chairman
Kevan Carroll (Melbourne Uni President, Admin Manager & CV Delegate)
John McConville (Carlton Admin Mgr & CV Delegate) Deputy Chairman
Ross MacKenzie (Northcote Vice-President & CV Delegate)
Ken Stone (Footscray Edgewater Vice-President & CV Delegate)
Kevan Carroll and Ken Stone were elected earlier this year for three-year terms. The remaining three positions
will become vacant at the March 2009 CV Delegates'
meeting.

MCGAIN AND SIDDLE

Fantastic news for Premier Cricket with the selection of Bryce McGain and Peter Siddle in the Australian squad of 15 to tour India next month. The news was especially exciting and rewarding for everyone involved in the development of these two players. MORE

HAWKS' 150TH ANNIVERSARY

H a w t h o r n - M o n a s h University will be celebrating its 150th anniversary during 2008/09, culminating in a special Round 15 clash with Melbourne, to be followed by a special celebration dinner. Hawthorn CC was formed in 1859 and the East Melbourne CC in 1860. The two clubs amalgamated in 1921/22 when the powerful East Melbourne club lost its ground with the extension of the Jolimont railyards. Hawthorn-East Melbourne won six premierships and was based at Glenferrie Oval until 1989, when the club took a "golden handshake" from the football club and relocated to Central Reserve, Glen Waverley. Hawthorn- Waverley won the 1998/99 premiership and the 1999/2000 VCA Club Championship. A merger with Monash University in 2002 saw the club again relocate to Monash Uni's Clayton campus.

1ST XI RECORDS ON PREMIER WEBSITE

The Premier Cricket website now contains details of every 1st XI cricketer ever to pull on a boot. As a result of the outstanding and exhaustive research by Honorary CV Statistician Ken Williams, details are available for every player to have ever played VCA Pennant, District or Premier Cricket. With an odd exception, such as during the war years when paper shortages restricted the publication of full results, comprehensive details are available in two sections:

CV 1st XI Player Register: Full names, date of birth and death, clubs played for and number of matches.
CV 1st XI Career Statistics: number of matches, runs, wickets, averages, catches, stumpings.

Upon scanning these records, we would be pleased to hear from anyone who may be able to add, update or correct any data. Please contact Peter Binns at Cricket Victoria with any additional information. Many thanks to Mr Ken Williams for his excellent work, and for his permission to make this data available on our website (go to www.premier.cricketvictoria.com.au then click on "history".
