Primary Edge Cup
The Twenty20 format of the game continues its upward spiral in popularity. It has attracted new fans and reinvigorated old ones and, whether the sceptics, cynics and doom-sayers like it or not, it is definitely here to stay. We have already had a Twenty20 World Cup and, despite the difficulties which might
prevail in fitting it into the schedule, the rapid evolution and success of the Twenty20 concept demands that administrators worldwide will have to find a way.
Premier Cricket is about to welcome back the Primary Edge Cup, our own Twenty20 Competition, for a fourth season. The first round is scheduled to commence on Tuesday 27 November. The first three titles have been won by Hawthorn-Monash Uni, Richmond and Dandenong.
Cricket Victoria is delighted to welcome back Primary Edge Marketing as the major sponsor of the Premier Twenty20 Competition. Many of our Premier Clubs have obtained their coloured gear through Primary Edge, which has a complete range of clothing available.
Matches are played from 5.15pm until about 8pm, starting on Tuesday 27 November 2007 and culminating in the Primary Edge Cup Final being played on Wednesday 30 January 2008.
Features of the Primary Edge Cup are the non-stop action; clubs wearing coloured clothing and a "bowl-out" to decide ties or "no-result" games.
Matches are a test for all participants. While the objectives for batsmen (less "dot balls") and bowlers (more "dot balls") are at odds, the urgency that the contest creates makes for great viewing. Players and umpires get the opportunity to experience the pressures of an even shorter one-day game, with a four-overs limit per bowler, five-over blocks from each end, field restrictions applicable, "free hits" for foot-fault no balls, incoming batsmen have just 90 seconds to face up or they will be timed out. Kookaburra Sport has again provided awards for the "Player of the Round" over the series as well as provision of the all-important "Regulation White" balls for all matches.
