Kookaburra Twenty20 Premier Cup

KOOKABURRA PREMIER TWENTY20 CUP

The worldwide Twenty20 phenomenon continues to grow. The world of cricket has Kookaburra Twenty20 Premier Cup
changed forever as, all of a sudden, we can't get enough of it. The 50-over game, for so long the exciting abbreviated format and ‘cash-cow' for the game, is now struggling for survival.

First introduced in 2004/05 at Premier level, one of the stars of that first season's competition was Dirk Nannes. In some ways Dirk epitomises the opportunities that the Twenty20 world can offer. In the past twelve months, Nannes has represented Fitzroy Doncaster, the Bushrangers, Australia, Middlesex, Delhi Daredevils and Holland in various formats of the game. Players such as Garry Sobers, Simon O'Donnell, Ian Botham, Steve Waugh, Viv Richards or Kapil Dev must be quietly cursing for having been born in the wrong era. How they would have embraced the Twenty20 format. For young players just coming into the game, the Twenty20 world may soon be their oyster.

Premier cricketers at all levels will have the opportunity to taste Twenty20 for the first time. Commencing on Sunday 8 November 2009, the Kookaburra Twenty20 Premier Cup will be played at Premier grounds across Melbourne. All four Premier XIs will play, with the 3rds and 4ths playing ‘curtainraisers' for the 1sts and 2nds. The CV Pennant Committee has introduced the program as a trial this season and is firmly of the view that Twenty20 cricket will form part of the Premier program proper from 2010/11.

Victorian Premier Cricket welcomes Kookaburra as its major sponsor for 2009/10. Kookaburra has been a long-term supporter of Premier Cricket, but has committed additional sponsorship for the next three years. All Premier and Sub-District Clubs will benefit from this sponsorship, which includes a cash component as well as product.

For Rounds 1 and 4 of the competition, all four XIs will participate, with matches commencing at 11am. Play in the two matches will go through until around 5.30pm. Rounds 2 and 3 comprise Firsts only, playing the popular and now traditional twilight mid-week matches. Play in these games is from 5.15pm until about 8pm.

Although this season's Kookaburra Twenty20 Premier Cup sees semi finals and final for the Firsts only, the other elevens will all contribute towards a ‘mini-Club Championship' for Twenty20. Points derived from matches in all four grades count towards this award, for which the successful club will receive a cash award of $1,500. This is in addition to the overall competition First XI prizemonies on offer of $2,500 for the winners, $1,000 for runners-up and $500 each for the semifinalists.

Features of the Primary Edge Cup are the non-stop action, white balls, party atmosphere with healthy crowds and coloured clothing. Over the past few seasons, several clubs have enlisted the services of several special celebrity guest players including Brendan Fevola, Marc Murphy, Ricky Olarenshaw, Leigh Harding, Cameron Smith, Brett Montgomery, Jimmy Bartel and Brett Deledio.
