Healy, Gerald Edward James

Prahran's premier batsman, Healy won the Prahran batting average a record 13 times. In a magnificent career, Healy was the club's highest scorer until Dav Whatmore passed his Prahran tally of 7527 in the early 1990s. Healy played in five premiership teams, was a member of the Victory Cup sides and was skipper in the 1910/11 triumph. A correct right-hand opener, Healy was devoted to cricket. Quiet and the supreme gentleman, he loved Prahran and with Sam Loxton, was one of their most talented sons. According to contemporary Heiney Schrader, Healy was also a brilliant cover and out fieldsman, one of the best of his day. Healy's father, JJ Healy played for Victoria in 1880/81 and was one of East Melbourne's most consistent players. He later became secretary of the VCA from 1911 - 1916. Young Gerald was an even better player and many thought he would have represented his State on more than just six occasions. For Victoria he made 301 runs @ 30.10 with a brilliant double century (218) out of 660 against Tasmania in Melbourne in a four-dayer in early 1910. He twice more hit more than 600 runs in a season for Prahran - in 1914/15 (607) and 1922/23 (662). He hit 21 centuries in all Prahran games - 13 more than his nearest competitor, and is one of only three men to make 200 for the club. On his transfer to Adelaide on business, Healy received a gold pen and pencil set and a framed record of his performances with the club. Returning after a brief time, he coached a group of Victorian schoolboys at Malvern in 1933/34. He died in Armadale, on 12 July 1946, aged 61.
