Grant Gardiner made history in 1996/97 when he became the first batsman to top the magical four-figure mark of runs in a Premier season since the inception of District Cricket in 1906/07. Grant, after going close with 979 runs @ 61.19 in 1993/94 scored 1046 @ 74.71 three seasons later. He was runner-up in the Ryder Medal on both occasions.
Grant's prolific scoring for the Dragons earned him Bushrangers' selection in 1994/95 and he finished his first class career with 1041 runs @ 30.61 with a highest score of 133* against the Redbacks at Optus Oval.
Grant captained Northcote to its 1996/97 premiership win, having also played in the club's 1986/87 flag victory.
