The Magpie all-rounder created history by becoming the inaugural Ryder Medallist in 1972/73. Bird was a handy left-hand bat and orthodox left-arm spinner over 18 seasons for Collingwood, taking over as skipper when Keith Stackpole left the club to captain/coach the Blues after the 1973/74 season. Bird played in 4 VCA Finals, playing in the Magpies' 1970/71 and 1974/75 premiership teams. In his Ryder Medal win, Bird (31 votes) won narrowly from Bob Cowper and Ken Eastwood (each 30). | |||||||||||||||
