A long-serving paceman at Northcote, Wal Dudley played 20 seasons for the Dragons, amassing 556 wickets as well as scoring 3666 runs. He was selected four times for Victoria, all in 1940-41, and also played VFL with Fitzroy.

Dudley headed the VCA bowling averages in 1946-47, taking 35 wickets at 11.37. His best figures were 9/29 against Collingwood at Victoria Park in 1949-50 and he scored two centuries - 126 against Collingwood at Westgarth Street in 1944-45 and 100* against Prahran at Northcote in 1943-44. Dudley won Northcote's bowling trophy a record eight times, his best season 1943-44 when he took 50 wickets at 13.16.
