A North Melbourne stalwart for 18 seasons from 1934-35 to 1952-53, Bob Dempster won the club's batting award six times and the bowling award three times in a distinguished career. The highest of his 12 centuries was an unbeaten 200 against Collingwood at Arden Street in 1940-41.

Dempster played eight times for Victoria between 1934-35 and 1940-41, his debut against Tasmania coming just four months after his District debut for VCA Colts. He was unable to cement a spot in the Victorian line-up, but his best innings of 87 not out helped the Vics defeat New South Wales by 24 runs at the SCG in 1940-41.
