A left-hand opening batsman, Watts had two distinct careers for Victoria after scoring prolifically for the Fitzroy Doncaster club. Watts scored three double centuries for the Lions as well as a string of hundreds. Watts won the Ryder Medal in 1993/94, the season the Lions also won the VCA premiership and, in a 322-game career, he won the Lions' batting average eleven times. In 2000/01, Watts became the all-time leading runscorer in Premier cricket history, surpassing the legendary John Scholes.
