"A big right-arm paceman and handy lower-order batsman, Watson became Footscray's second Ryder Medallist (after John Shepherd) when he took out the award in 1979/80. Watson polled 36 votes to comfortably win from Doug Gott and Shaun Graf, each on 28. This topped off a great year for the Bulldogs who won their first VCA premiership the same season. Watson's 49 wickets @ 15.86 played a big part in Footscray's triumph.

Picked twice for Victoria the following season in the McDonald's Cup, Watson was the Bulldogs' Club Champion in 1975/76, 1978/79 and 1981/82 and later won the RM Hatch Medal in 1985/86 whilst playing Sub-District cricket for Sunshine."
