"An extremely capable right-hand batsman whose career was revived by his win in the 1981/82 Ryder Medal. Taylor polled 36 votes to win from Northcote's Brendan McArdle (29) and North Melbourne's Peter Cox (27).

Mick Taylor performed well enough for South Melbourne to be selected for Victoria in 1977/78 and he responded with 75 & 107 on debut against Queensland, however he played just 5 matches over the next two seasons.

Recalled in 1982/83, Taylor became Victoria's most consistent batsman, scoring 771 @ 45.35, 1010 @ 72.14 and 801 @ 50.06 over the next three seasons to be in contention for a berth on the 1985 Ashes Tour. When he was overlooked, Taylor toured South Africa with the Australian ""Rebels"" in 1985/86 and 1986/87. Returning to domestic cricket in Australia, Taylor gave Tasmania fine service with 1003 runs @ 45 in 1987/88 and prolific grade cricket performances, including a hat-trick of premierships with North Hobart in 1991/92, 1992/93 and 1993/94, before resuming with South Melbourne in 1994/95."
