James Sutherland played 4 first class matches between 1990/91 and 1992/93 and was 12th man on another four occasions as well, including the Bushrangers' victorious 1990/91 Sheffield Shield Final at the MCG. His record of 54 runs @ 13.50 and 9 wickets @ 39.78 included best figures of 2/23 at the Junction Oval against Queensland in 1990/91 in the win that set up the Vics' appearance in the Final. In 9 one-day matches, James scored 28 runs @ 9.33 and took 12 wickets @ 26.75, with best figures of 3/26 against WA at the MCG in 1992/93. It was at Premier Cricket level, however, that James Sutherland excelled in an outstanding career. In 179 1st XI matches for Melbourne and University between 1985/86 and 1996/97, he scored 1908 runs @ 21.93 with 7 half-centuries and a top score of 74 not out and took 403 wickets @ 21.12 with best figures of 7/19. Of pace bowlers, only Shaun Graf and James Sutherland have topped the 400 wicket mark since the introduction of covers in 1981. James played in three premierships - two with University (1990/91, 1995/96) and one with the Demons (1992/93).
