"Jeff Russ was a fine right-arm paceman and useful batsman for the Tigers between 1967/68 and 1983/84. He won the bowling award four times, was Club Champion four times and a good enough batsman to win the Tigers' batting average in 1974/75. Russ played in the club's premierships of 1976/77 and 1982/83, but also played in four unsuccessful VCA Finals for the Tigers. Russ also headed the VCA bowling aggregates in 1970/71 and 1975/76 and the VCA bowling averages in 1970/71. In the 1976/77 flag triumph over Collingwood, Russ contributed 70 as a makeshift opener, whilst in the 1982/83 win over Carlton, Russ' 3/38 included the vital wicket of Stackpole.
Russ was an inaugural member of the VCA 200 Club when it was introduced in 1985. Like his teammate and pace bowling colleague of many years, Graeme Paterson, Russ was unlucky to have been overlooked for higher honours."
