"Ponsford was a stocky right-hand opening batsman who scored runs with the ruthless efficiency of a machine. He remains the only player to have exceeded 400 twice in first class cricket and also scored centuries in each of his first and last two Tests - not bad for a player who was colour blind and could not tell red from green! Ponsford's first class record for Victoria (6902 runs @ 86.28 in 55 matches) is superb and his incredible feat of 1146 first class runs in the month of December 1927 is unlikely to ever be surpassed. Ponsford scored 133 (v SA at Adleaide), 437 (v Qld at MCG), 202 & 38 (v NSW at MCG) and 336 (v SA at MCG).

Ponsford was just as prolific at District level, as his career average of 54.61 indicates. No player in history has played in more VCA Premierships than Ponsford's eight - 3 with St Kilda and 5 with Melbourne."
