"An outstanding all-round sportsman, Hec Oakley was an accomplished amateur footballer, several times a Victorian Champion table-tennis player and a five-time St Kilda Club Champion tennis player.

In a 19-season playing career for St Kilda, Oakley played 222 matches and was a member of the 1931/32 and 1933/34 premiership teams. In the former, in a low-scoring match, Oakley top-scored with a crucial 48 against Fitzroy and, in the latter win over Richmond at the MCG, Oakley's 89 was second top-score. Oakley topped the VCA batting aggregates in his first season of 1929/30 with 754 runs @ 68.54, he headed the VCA batting averages in 1939/40 with 814 @ 50.87 and his career runs tally of 8307 is still a St Kilda record.

Oakley was an attractive right-hand batsman with a wide array of strokes, good enough to play 28 first class matches for Victoria between 1929/30 and 1938/39 He scored 1605 runs @ 43.37 with 4 centuries, three of which (108 in 1929/30, 115 in 1931/32 and 103 in 1932/33) were against South Australia at the MCG and his top-score of 162 v Tasmania at Hobart in 1938/39.

Following his retirement, Oakley served as a St Kilda VCA Delegate (1960-1972 and VCA Executive Committee member (1968-1972) as well as many years service to St Kilda as committeeman and vice-president. He was a VCA Medallion Holder and an inaugural inductee into the VCA 200 Club.

Hec's son Ross played 62 VFL games for St Kilda and was later Chief Executive of the AFL Commission from 1987-1996."
