An outstanding fast bowler for North Melbourne, Richard McCarthy took out the 1988/89 Ryder Medal, polling 40 votes to win by three from Prahran's Sri Lankan star Aravinda de Silva on 37. McCarthy was the Kangaroos' Club Champion in 1988/89 and 1989/90 and took out the club's bowling award on five occasions (1982/83, 1984/85, 1987/88, 1988/89 and 1989/90). He played 11 first class matches for the Bushrangers between 1984/85 and 1989/90 before moving to the UK where he established himself as a legend in the Yorkshire Leagues.
