A left-handed opening batsman, Lawry made an outstanding contribution to Victorian and Australian cricket during the 60s. The pigeon-fancier from Northcote was a gritty fighter and one of Australia's finest Test batsmen and his magnificent epic 282 not out in the VCA District Final in 1965/66 epitomised his single-minded determination. Lawry remains a well-known figure in Australian cricket through his enthusiastic commentaries on Channel 9, as well as serving the VCA for a decade as Cricket Manager during the 1990s.
