Like his uncle, Dav Whatmore, Michael Ephraims was born in Ceylon and a right-hand opening batsman. A member of Prahran's 1983/84 premiership team, Ephraims won the 1985/86 Ryder Medal when he polled 31 votes, one ahead of John Scholes and Julien Wiener and two ahead of Gary Cosier. At 23, he was the youngest Ryder Medallist at that time, an honour subsequently taken by Peter Harper in 1997/98.
Apart from heading the VCA batting aggregates in 1985/86 with 761 @ 50.73, Ephraims' brilliant fielding gained him selection in 4 McDonalds Cup matches for Victoria that season as well as sub-fielder in some one-day internationals at the MCG.
Following his Ryder Medal win, Ephraims, also a State Rugby Union representative, moved to Queensland.
