An outstanding left-handed opening batsman, Elliott played 21 Tests for Australia, with three centuries and was adjudged one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year in 1998. On three occasions Elliott was voted the Sheffield Shield player of the season, including his Victorian record season of 2003/04, when he scored 1429 runs @ 79.39, with seven centuries.
Elliott was also a fine player for Collingwood and Camberwell Magpies whenever opportunities allowed him to play. He played in five finals for the Magpies, all of them unsuccessful, but some of Elliott's best innings were played in finals matches. The highest of his twelve centuries at Premier level was 201 against Melbourne in the 2004/05 Premier semi-final at the Albert Ground. He also carried his bat for an unbeaten 153 of a total of 286, also against the Demons, in the nail-biting 1992/93 VCA Final at Toorak Park.
